Emiratisation or Emiratization?

Both spellings mean the same thing. Emiratisation, with an "s", is the British spelling used by MoHRE and UAE government sources. Emiratization is the US spelling.

Why the UAE has Emiratisation

Most private-sector jobs in the UAE have historically been held by expatriates, while Emiratis worked mainly in government. Emiratisation aims to give Emiratis real careers across the economy and to build national skills for the long term. Since 2021, the programme has moved from encouragement to binding targets, backed by Nafis support that makes private-sector offers competitive.

How it works in practice

  1. Targets for employers. Companies grow the share of Emiratis in skilled roles each half-year. See targets.
  2. Counting rules. Only skilled roles count, and Emiratis count if paid at least AED 6,000. See how to calculate.
  3. Support for Emiratis. Nafis tops up salaries and pays family allowances. See Nafis.
  4. Contributions and incentives. Missed positions cost AED 10,000 a month; strong performers join the Emiratisation Partners Club.

How it compares with the Gulf

Saudi Arabia runs Saudization through Nitaqat bands and profession rules; Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain have their own localisation programmes. See Emiratisation vs Saudization.
